Choosing wedding flowers: Tips & ideas

Wedding flowers are one of the most expensive items on the wedding budget which makes choosing them very important. They are certainly an item you cannot ignore if you want a beautiful and elegant wedding. Today we will talk tips for choosing wedding flowers and you will also get a glimpse into my wedding while we are at it.

My dream was to have lots of flowers like those you see on beautiful Pinterest boards but reality struck when I received the quotes from the florist shops. I mean seriously, I am surprised people pay these exorbitant amounts but I guess if you can afford it, why not.

Since I am not Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex; my goal was to find a florist that would create a look as close to the one I dreamed of without breaking the bank. Our wedding theme was simple, classic elegance with a touch of glam. Being the terrible procrastinator that I am, I chose my florist 4 months before the wedding. I definitely would recommend giving yourself more time than I did. I was lucky to find a great florist who could accommodate my time frame. If you are getting married in the Rhode Island area, I definitely recommend Studio 539 Flowers. We were very happy with the way the flowers turned out with no glitches in the process.

There are so many things to consider when choosing your wedding flowers. Here are the main things I learned from my own experience.

5 Important things to consider when choosing wedding flowers
  1. Budget: First things first, how much can you afford and how much are you willing to pay? Always set the wedding budget first so you make sure you do not go into debt after all is said and done. Try to stick to the budget as much as you can. Request quotes from various florists before making your decision. When you get frustrated about not affording what you want, just remember the flowers won’t last but the memories will.
  2. DIY or florist service: Decide if you want to do your own flowers or have a florist take care of everything. I chose a florist because I already live a busy life and anything to reduce my workload and reduce stress was important to me. If you have more time on your hands and want to save more money you could order flowers from places like Whole Foods and arrange them yourself. Whole Foods especially is well known for their ability to cater to wedding requests with great results.
  3. Venue style and size: You will be surprised how many people forget about the size of the venue and focus only on the number of tables to decorate. If you have a large room with high ceilings then small flower arrangements are just going to disappear‌ in the furniture and not have a visual impact. A small venue may look too crowded with large centerpieces on every table. We had a medium sized venue so we had some tables with large centerpieces and others with small centerpieces. This was a great way to lower the costs and worked well with the room size.
  4. Wedding theme: Is your wedding going to have a rustic farmhouse feel or are you going for a more polished and glitzy wedding? Knowing and sticking to your wedding theme creates a cohesive and visually appealing wedding. For example the wheat bundles will look great in rustic farmhouse style wedding but will not work well in a classic vintage themed wedding.
  5. Bride and bridal party flowers. Your bouquet is a key accessory to your dress. Put a lot of thought into it and make sure it complements and doesn’t overpower your dress. Also remember the bridesmaids flowers are also a key factor to a pretty wedding. For example, If your bridesmaids dresses are soft colors then you want flowers that complement that look; think whites and pastels. Flower girls flowers and groomsmen boutonnieres should all be considered when deciding on your flowers.

How to choose wedding Shoes

Now that you have found your wedding dress, the next item on your list are the shoes. Understandably choosing the dress is the highlight of the entire process but the shoes deserve some thought and excitement too. The wrong shoes can ruin an entire outfit, so you do not want that to happen with one of the most glamorous outfits you will ever wear.

Christian Louboutin So Kate glitter pump

For my wedding I knew I wanted a shoe that had some height, not too over the top but still screamed glam. The Christian Louboutin So Kate glitter pump was the perfect match for my dress and checked all the boxes of what I was looking for. I shopped for shoes with my mother and we both knew it was the one the moment we saw it.

Things to consider when choosing wedding shoes

First things first, you should only choose the shoe after the dress. The dress determines the style of shoe you will pick. For example, if your dress is short and simple then your shoe has to have a wow factor. Other important things to consider are:

  • The length of your dress. Once you have decided on your dress it is highly recommended to take the actual shoe you like to the dress fitting. This will allow the taylor to make the dress the perfect length. For example for my dress, although it was long I still wanted a tiny bit of my shoe to be visible under the dress. The tailor was able to customize the length to allow this.
  • The Venue. Remember you will be walking around and taking photos. For example if you are having a beach or garden wedding, super high heels may not make sense. You should also consider wearing heel protectors if you will be walking in the grass. My dress was long so I was able to remove my heels during the photo session which involved walking down a hill.
  • Style of dress and wedding. If you have a vintage style wedding dress or vintage theme then you probably want a shoe that complements that theme. A casual beach wedding will require a much simpler style of shoe. Basically the shoe should not look like an after thought.
  • Comfort. Last but not least the comfort level of your shoe is very important. There is nothing more unattractive than a seeing a woman limping and looking very uncomfortable on her wedding day. You want to look and feel the best on your day so take care of your feet.

How to host an Elegant Bridal Shower

I have always loved hosting dinner parties at home. However, after my wedding this year I realized that planning events is something that I love to do as well. Bridal showers are traditionally planned by the mother of the bride or the maid of honor but since I live in a different country from my family, I broke tradition and planned the event myself. After all it’s not a sacred rule.

My bridal shower was small and intimate as most of my guests were from out-of-town. It was one of the best times we had during the wedding week. After it’s success I decided it will be great to share with you some tips to achieve a great elegant bridal shower party.

You don’t have to wear white: Most brides like to wear white, which is fine but is not mandatory. You can rock any color you like. You can also wear whatever you want but it should be something that is you and not out of character. I prefer classic style so naturally I went for a blush colored Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn style dress with simple pumps.

The guests are more important that anything else: Aside from it being your special time, always make sure you are surrounded by genuine people who mean something to you. It meant a lot to me to have my mother, mother-in-law and her family as well as my sister, aunts, cousins there with me. Having them there made the event even more special. Listening to all their jokes and advice was created a fun filled occasion.

Location is key: Its totally ok to have your bridal shower at a relative’s house but taking your guests to an unfamiliar location adds an element of adventure. I chose a country club for my venue because they usually have an element of class, great ambiance, customer service and surroundings. So many options like a private room in a restaurant, a rooftop bar, outside in beautiful park or hotel private poolside area are all good ideas for elegant bridal showers.

Keep Decor Simple and elegant: I’m sure you have been to those bridal showers with excessive amounts of balloons, decorations, glitter, fake flowers and crazy themes. That’s all good if that is what you like but if you trying to do an elegant event then it may not be the way to do it. You do not need complicated, over the top decor to make a beautiful event. There is so much to be said for simple elegance; fresh flowers, all white table linen and shiny silver ware. This is the look that I went for with mine and everyone loved it.

Other tips for an elegant bridal shower party:

  • Do Brunch: What is more elegant than ladies in beautiful dresses and fascinators eating brunch. Brunch is the quentisenntial perfect meal choice for elegant bridal showers and for good reason. They are not a typical everyday meal time and a good excuse to drink alcohol before 5pm.
  • Serve a fun drink: We had the classic mimosa for mine because who can deny the deliciousness of champagne and citrus. You can serve your favorite drink but please do make sure its one that can be served in a champagne flute or a nice glass at least. If you are looking for elegance this is key.
  • The food should be on point: Eggs and toast is fine at home but not for your elegant bridal shower brunch. Serve something that people don’t eat at home everyday. How about a delicious pecan french toast, cheesy egg muffins, mini pancake stacks, delicious sausage and more!

Last but not least let loose and have fun! Elegant doesn’t mean boring and stuffy. You can still laugh it up, play naughty games and have a blast.

Blissfully Blinged Out

It has been about 6 months since Marcus and I got engaged and I am happy to say that the excitement has not worn off and the glow on my face is very much alive. After being together for over 7 years the engagement came very naturally when we both felt ready to take the plunge. I still remember the proposal and recall looking at the ring and smiling all night after I said yes. Today, I have partnered up with E.B. Horn to share our engagement story and discuss some useful tips for choosing a ring.

Blissfully Blinged Out E.B HornBlissfully Blinged Out E.B Horn

So this is how it happened. It was the day after Christmas and we were spending the day at home relaxing and recovering from all the food and partying from the previous day. Sometime in the afternoon Marcus told me he was going out to run an errand or something. I did not suspect anything even though in retrospect, him getting out of the house after sleeping so late was unlike him.  He would normally be laying on the couch all day and of course I later found out he was going to pick up the ring. When he came back home, we had a beautiful dinner with good food and wine.  After dinner there was a moment when I walked into the kitchen. As I turned around, there he was kneeling down and saying how I was the best thing that ever happened to him and how he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I am pretty sure he said other things but it was all a blur after the first words.

The moment was so special and at that time it felt like we were the only ones on the entire planet. He got me a princess cut diamond ring on a white gold setting which I totally love. I love that it shines from afar and is very elegant and timeless. The ring makes me feel blissfully blinged out with its sparkle.

Blissfully Blinged Out E.B Horn  Because of my collaboration with E.B. Horn I was fortunate enough to try on their stunning engagement rings and now you get to see them too! All the rings including the diamond bracelet in this post are from E.B  Horn which is pretty awesome. They are also known to have the largest selection of jewelry in New England therefore there is something for everyone.

Buying a ring can be a very overwhelming yet fun experience. To prevent the dreaded ring shopping stress, remember these tips and your experience will be more fun than stress.

Tips for choosing a engagement ring:

  1. Set a budget: We all would like a 5 carat diamond ring however we are not Beyonce or Princess Kate so it is important to know how much you can spend without leaving you in serious debt and eating instant noodles every day. Once you set a budget that you feel comfortable with then it will help you get into the store and ask the sales person to only show you rings in that price range, that way you don’t get tempted to exceed budget.
  2. Select a diamond shape: There are different kinds of women. Those who like a round shape, the princess cut ladies, oval or cushion cut fans and more. Because shape is very subjective, it is important to know the shape the receiver likes. The round shape is the most popular with princess cut in second place. The great thing is that there are many options.
  3. Choose a metal: You have to think to yourself, is your future fiancé and yellow gold or white gold/platinum kind of person. I personally love gold jewelry but when it comes to a engagement rings it has gotta be white gold or platinum.
  4. Choose a reputable store: With so many scammers out there it is important to do your research and only buy from a licensed jeweler. Local Jewelers like E.B. Horn are also more reasonably priced than the large chain stores.
  5. Give yourself time: Once you choose a ring, it can take anywhere from 1 week to 6 weeks before you get the ring. Keep this in mind if you are planning on proposing on a trip or specific date.
  6. Understand the four C’s of diamonds: The four C’s of diamonds are Carat, Cut, Clarity and Color. With cut being the most important as it determines the diamonds sparkle some people focus on carat which is the weight of the diamond. Keep in mind, the higher the carats the higher the price.

Which one is your favorite ring? I am looking forward to knowing your thoughts in the comments below.

FYI: This post is in collaboration with E.B. Horn however the images, content and opinions are completely my own.
