Good Eats Boston: The new By Chloe Carrot Dog

Boston’s restaurant scene is hot with so many new restaurants opening and new menu offerings. One of my favorite new menu item is the Carrot Dog from By Chloe, a vegan spot with 4 locations in Boston including the buzzing Boston Seaport area. By Chloe has become a regular feature on our Good Eats Boston series and for good reason. They know how to do vegan food well.

I know what you are thinking, Carrot Dog sounds like a very out of the box hot dog style. Should you try it? My answer is yes, It’s delicious! Once you hear how it is made it will all make sense.

The Carrot Dog is made from whole, hand-picked carrots that have been cured and seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and oregano, smoked over local oak and maple wood, aged, and then grilled. It’s served classic NY style with sauerkraut and Sir Kensington’s Classic Yellow Mustard in a toasted potato bun. Sounds good, right? I am actually mad at myself for not thinking about this first.

If you stop at By Chloe I highly recommend trying some of their sweets too. From red velvet cupcakes,  donuts to cookies, they have it all. You can also order smoothies and ice cream that are much needed this summer.

Cajun Tofu Tacos with Lettuce Wraps

Cajun Tofu Tacos with lettuce wraps! Yes, you heard that right. Just when you thought tofu was boring and only good for rice dishes and stir-fries, today we are making tofu even more fun with tacos.

The great thing about tofu is that it absorbs flavors very well so you can season it to your liking. We are going bold with Cajun spice because of its delicious flavor profile. Using Romaine lettuce leaves instead of flour tortillas is another twist to this recipe that is perfect for spring and summer lunches.

Cajun Tofu Tacos with lettuce wrapsThe key to great tofu dishes is good quality tofu. There are so many brands to choose from these days so it is easy to find one you like. One of my favorite tofu brands is Mori-Nu Silken Tofu. Their tofu is sold in a unique aseptic package that protects the tofu from light and bacteria which gives it a long shelf life without refrigeration and preservatives, which is absolutely awesome. This is especially great if you use large amounts of tofu and don’t want to go to the grocery store regularly to restock. I bought 12 boxes and stored them in the pantry. It has been so convenient.

Mori-Nu Silken Tofu Extra Firm

Cajun Tofu Tacos with lettuce wraps recipe:

The idea to make Cajun-spiced tofu tacos came about after I ate some Cajun-spiced fries that were super delicious. I thought to myself, if Cajun spice can make these simple fries taste amazing, I bet it would make tofu even more amazing. Boy, was I right! The tofu absorbed the Cajun flavor and tasted fantastic. I later found out that others had already tried this combo and it wasn’t my great invention. Nevertheless this recipe has become a regular in our home and is a true winner.

This Cajun Tofu Tacos with lettuce wraps recipe is very easy and quick to make. All you need is tofu, Cajun spice, olive oil, salt and lettuce. To add another level of flavor, I added a simple homemade salsa to the tacos. So simple yet so delicious.

In My Pantry: Boca Veggie Burgers

About 9 years ago when I moved to Massachusetts, I rented a room from a lovely Irish woman who showed me around Boston and taught me a few things. One thing I remember about her is that she used to buy Boca burger patties and they always looked so good when she made them. Granted they are not very expensive at less than $4 a box, at that time I could only afford a ramen noodle diet and 4 bucks was a lot. I remember telling myself I would try them one day.

Fast forward to 2018 where I have a decent life were I can afford to live on more than ramen noodles, Boca burger patties have become a regular on my menu. I am far from a vegetarian but I try to eat 2 meatless meals a week some of which include Boca products.

Boca veggie patties are plant-based and made from soy protein and wheat gluten. With 13 grams of protein per serving and 90% less fat than a ground beef hamburger, they are a great choice for those who are trying to lower their fat consumption and lower their cholesterol intake. I especially love how they taste extremely good, you seriously will not miss meat when you have these.

BOCA VEGGIE BURGERSSo what is the best way to eat a Boca veggie burger? I say, in a delicious naan bread sandwich. Here is how I do it. I lightly toast some garlic naan bread, top it with lettuce and arugula mixed with a herb vinaigrette, then place the cooked Boca Original Turk’y Veggie Burger patties topped with a simple tomato, onion and cucumber salsa. To eat I fold the naan bread into a sandwich and boy is it a bite of heaven.

Other ways to eat a Boca Veggie Burger:

  • In a traditional style burger: Make a delicious burger with a veggie patty, sriracha mayo, onions and tomato.
  • In a tortilla wrap: Add to flour tortilla wrap with shredded lettuce, onion, tomato with spicy mayo.
  • Make a vegan version of chicken parmesan with the Boca patty in place of the chicken.

Have you tried the Boca original vegan veggie patties? How do you like to eat yours? What it your favorite meatless meal? I would love to hear from you in the comment box below!
