How to Choose Flowers for your Home

Flowers are beautiful on their own and generally when choosing flowers there are no rules. It is as simple as choosing the flower type you like. However, since certain flowers don’t always go with every surrounding, it is helpful to pay attention to the flower colors that complement your home.

I am one of those people that puts a lot of thought into every single thing and flowers are no exception. Since we are spending most of our time at home in these COVID 19 days, flowers will be a great way to bring some brightness to our homes.

Today I am sharing some ideas on what flowers go with certain wall colors and home decor styles. Do you put a lot of thought to the color of flowers you buy for your home? I think it is worth it to consider the colors that go with your home if you love to have a beautifully decorated home.

Neutral homes or those with the trendy gray tones are versatile and are best matched with pastels and bright colored flowers. Our home has a bit of a coastal and gray color theme so I always find that white flowers, pastel blues and soft pink flowers always complement my decor. Think pastel blue hydrangeas, white and pink peonies and champagne roses for bright homes. The pink and white roses in the first image gave a nice and gentle pop of color to our dining room. I also loved combination of white carnations and eucalyptus branches that I recently tried. Super fresh and bright!

Homes painted in warm tones of yellow or tan go well with deep and rich colors like reds, violet hues and deep oranges. I also find that green plants really look great with this color scheme. In essence green plants go with every style.

The easiest way to determine what colors work is to choose deep tones for warm toned wall colors and soft tones for lighter wall colors. The flower colors do not necessarily have to have the same color  but should complement your existing decor and wall color. For example; if you have yellow walls, yellow roses will not be the best choice but white roses would be great.

Quick flower tip!  Don’t throw your flowers away when they dry up. I learned this trick from my mother; spray the flowers with a little hair spray to make them last much longer. Some flowers like lavender and baby’s breath still maintain their beauty even when dried. The flowers in the last 2 images are actually dry and were sprayed with some hair spray.

Are you still buying or ordering flowers during these COVID 19 days? What are your tricks to make them last longer? I would love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Choosing wedding flowers: Tips & ideas

Wedding flowers are one of the most expensive items on the wedding budget which makes choosing them very important. They are certainly an item you cannot ignore if you want a beautiful and elegant wedding. Today we will talk tips for choosing wedding flowers and you will also get a glimpse into my wedding while we are at it.

My dream was to have lots of flowers like those you see on beautiful Pinterest boards but reality struck when I received the quotes from the florist shops. I mean seriously, I am surprised people pay these exorbitant amounts but I guess if you can afford it, why not.

Since I am not Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex; my goal was to find a florist that would create a look as close to the one I dreamed of without breaking the bank. Our wedding theme was simple, classic elegance with a touch of glam. Being the terrible procrastinator that I am, I chose my florist 4 months before the wedding. I definitely would recommend giving yourself more time than I did. I was lucky to find a great florist who could accommodate my time frame. If you are getting married in the Rhode Island area, I definitely recommend Studio 539 Flowers. We were very happy with the way the flowers turned out with no glitches in the process.

There are so many things to consider when choosing your wedding flowers. Here are the main things I learned from my own experience.

5 Important things to consider when choosing wedding flowers
  1. Budget: First things first, how much can you afford and how much are you willing to pay? Always set the wedding budget first so you make sure you do not go into debt after all is said and done. Try to stick to the budget as much as you can. Request quotes from various florists before making your decision. When you get frustrated about not affording what you want, just remember the flowers won’t last but the memories will.
  2. DIY or florist service: Decide if you want to do your own flowers or have a florist take care of everything. I chose a florist because I already live a busy life and anything to reduce my workload and reduce stress was important to me. If you have more time on your hands and want to save more money you could order flowers from places like Whole Foods and arrange them yourself. Whole Foods especially is well known for their ability to cater to wedding requests with great results.
  3. Venue style and size: You will be surprised how many people forget about the size of the venue and focus only on the number of tables to decorate. If you have a large room with high ceilings then small flower arrangements are just going to disappear‌ in the furniture and not have a visual impact. A small venue may look too crowded with large centerpieces on every table. We had a medium sized venue so we had some tables with large centerpieces and others with small centerpieces. This was a great way to lower the costs and worked well with the room size.
  4. Wedding theme: Is your wedding going to have a rustic farmhouse feel or are you going for a more polished and glitzy wedding? Knowing and sticking to your wedding theme creates a cohesive and visually appealing wedding. For example the wheat bundles will look great in rustic farmhouse style wedding but will not work well in a classic vintage themed wedding.
  5. Bride and bridal party flowers. Your bouquet is a key accessory to your dress. Put a lot of thought into it and make sure it complements and doesn’t overpower your dress. Also remember the bridesmaids flowers are also a key factor to a pretty wedding. For example, If your bridesmaids dresses are soft colors then you want flowers that complement that look; think whites and pastels. Flower girls flowers and groomsmen boutonnieres should all be considered when deciding on your flowers.

6 Affordable ways to transform your bathroom

  1. Use attractive soap and hand cream dispensers: Many liquid hand soap dispensers come in standard containers that are almost similar to household cleaner containers which is certainly not attractive. I think it’s totally worth it to spend a little more for the better looking bottle if it will make your bathroom look prettier. You can find these kind of pretty containers from stores like Home Goods, Crate & Barrel and more.
  2. Use candles: Candles have become a major player in the decor industry and for good reason. Candles provide instant warmth and coziness to a room. You can buy plain candles but you will take your bedroom to another level by using candles that have more details or nice holders. You will notice the candle that I used above has some cute detail that goes with my theme.
  3. Decorate with perfume bottles: You can’t deny that a bottle of chanel No. 5 on a bathroom vanity provides instant elegance to your bathroom. Many other perfume brands have stunning bottles that you can use for decor.
  4. Use flowers: Flowers are a guaranteed way to liven up and add beauty to a room. You can find affordable flowers as Trader Joe’s or your local farmers market. I usually get a bunch from Trader Joe’s for $3.99 and they last me for 2 weeks.
  5. Invest in good towels and rugs: There is a reason why 5 star hotels use luxurious towels in their bathrooms. You will notice an instant change to your bathroom with soft plush towels and rugs. Your guests will love it too.
  6. Try a fabric shower curtain instead of plastic: I know what you are thinking, a fabric shower curtain will not be effective. There is an easy solution, all you need to do is line the fabric curtain with a plastic curtain behind it to prevent water permeating.

Now that you know these 6 affordable ways to transform your bathroom, I would love to know what you do to make rooms in your home look better without spending too much.

Spring bedroom revamp

We just had our first day of spring which happened to be a snow day in Boston but I am very optimistic that sunshine is on its way. Since its spring I have an urge to revamp our dull guest bedroom and give it a fresh look. I find that simply changing your bedding can transform a bedroom and after shopping around I have fallen in love with the quality and look of Crane and Canopy bedding. I have selected some of my favorite sets from their collection to share with you. I really think if you like crisp and well designed bedding they are the way to go.
