Have you been to Panera bread? They have this This Medirrannean Quinoa salad with almonds that is so delicous I had to tell you about it. Filled with kale, romaine, cucumbers, tomato sofrito, kalamata olives, quinoa and toasted almonds tossed with Greek dressing, its’ certainly worth trying. I have had a few people say that eating out is bad but I always say its all in the choices we make.
What makes this salad a healthy option is that it is a balanced meal with a perfect blend of vitamins, dietary fibre, carbs, healthy fats and lots more nutritional value. A serving contains less than 500 calories which is sufficient to keep you mentally alert and energized for the rest of day. You do not want to order a heavy lunch that leaves you feeling lethargic.
Benefits of eating salads
- They are filled with fruits and vegetables which are rich in nutrients – Some research has found that eating fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of many diseases including cancer, heart disease and obesity.
- The fibre content is very high which helps with lowering cholesterol and preventing constipation.
- Eating more salads helps with weight control – This is because when you eat a salad you feel full quickly with less food therefore reducing your calorie intake.
My only advice when you eat a lot of salads is watch the ingredient list as some salads may appear healthy when they are not. For example a chicken caesar salad may sound great but the cheese, croutons and dressing are high in calories you might as well be eating a burger. Try to make your dressings or opt for the vinaigrettes instead of the creamy dressings which are high is sugar, sodium and unhealthy fats.
