Boston Restaurants Offering Take-Out & more during Coronavirus Crisis

The past month has been very different and we are all going through something that none of us have ever experienced before. Schools closing, working from home and staying in all the time has become the norm. I am appreciative as all we are being asked to do is stay home which is nothing in comparison to all the hard work the nurses, doctors and everyone out there are doing. The restaurant industry and other small businesses are facing very challenging times and now is a good time to support our local restaurants and businesses.

How to Choose Flowers for your Home

Flowers are beautiful on their own and generally when choosing flowers there are no rules. It is as simple as choosing the flower type you like. However, since certain flowers don’t always go with every surrounding, it is helpful to pay attention to the flower colors that complement your home.

I am one of those people that puts a lot of thought into every single thing and flowers are no exception. Since we are spending most of our time at home in these COVID 19 days, flowers will be a great way to bring some brightness to our homes.

Today I am sharing some ideas on what flowers go with certain wall colors and home decor styles. Do you put a lot of thought to the color of flowers you buy for your home? I think it is worth it to consider the colors that go with your home if you love to have a beautifully decorated home.

Neutral homes or those with the trendy gray tones are versatile and are best matched with pastels and bright colored flowers. Our home has a bit of a coastal and gray color theme so I always find that white flowers, pastel blues and soft pink flowers always complement my decor. Think pastel blue hydrangeas, white and pink peonies and champagne roses for bright homes. The pink and white roses in the first image gave a nice and gentle pop of color to our dining room. I also loved combination of white carnations and eucalyptus branches that I recently tried. Super fresh and bright!

Homes painted in warm tones of yellow or tan go well with deep and rich colors like reds, violet hues and deep oranges. I also find that green plants really look great with this color scheme. In essence green plants go with every style.

The easiest way to determine what colors work is to choose deep tones for warm toned wall colors and soft tones for lighter wall colors. The flower colors do not necessarily have to have the same color  but should complement your existing decor and wall color. For example; if you have yellow walls, yellow roses will not be the best choice but white roses would be great.

Quick flower tip!  Don’t throw your flowers away when they dry up. I learned this trick from my mother; spray the flowers with a little hair spray to make them last much longer. Some flowers like lavender and baby’s breath still maintain their beauty even when dried. The flowers in the last 2 images are actually dry and were sprayed with some hair spray.

Are you still buying or ordering flowers during these COVID 19 days? What are your tricks to make them last longer? I would love to hear from you in the comment section below.

How to Make Cauliflower Rice

Cauliflower has been trending in the foodie world lately and for good reason. The vegetable is super versatile, low carb and nutritious. One of my favorite ways is to eat it like rice or cut it into steak like shapes and roast it. Making cauliflower rice is very easy and much cheaper than buying the pre-packaged one which can sometimes have preservatives added.

How to Make Cauliflower Rice

2 Easy Steps to Perfect Cauliflower Rice:

  • All you need is a fresh and healthy looking head of cauliflower without too many brown bruises. Remove the leaves, cut off any brown bits and cut the head into 8 pieces.

How to Make Cauliflower Rice

  • Place 4 pieces of cauliflower in the food processor at a time and hit the pulse button to gently break down the cauliflower. I find that I only need to hit the pulse button 3 times to achieve the perfect rice like pieces. This also depends on the type of food processor you have.

After you are done processing the second batch the result will be a large bowl filled with cauliflower rice that you can use for any dish. You can even freeze it in batches for at least a week for quick weeknight dinners.

3 Easy Cauliflower Rice Recipes:

  • Simple Herb Cauliflower Rice: Heat a large pot over medium high heat. Add a tablespoon olive oil and and sauté 1 finely chopped medium onion with 2 cloves garlic. Add the fresh rice to onion mix and sauté  for about 4 minutes till cauliflower is cooked but not too soft. Add chopped parsley, cilantro and a squeeze of lemon juice from half a lemon. Mix and serve immediately.
  • Cauliflower Rice Biryani: If you love spicy biryanis but want to switch things up or are trying to lower your carb intake, this is the perfect dish. All you need to do is substitute rice with cauliflower rice in your usual biryani recipe and voila! It really tastes so good.
  • Cauliflower Fried Rice: Sauté onions, garlic and ginger in a large wok or pan with olive oil for about 3 minutes. Add sliced carrots, green beans, red bell pepper and saute for another 3 minutes. Lastly add the rice and roughly chopped bok choy. Add half a teaspoon sesame oil, 2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce and a tsp oyster sauce. Cook for another 3 minutes and serve with protein of choice.

Super Easy Pancake Recipe

I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t like pancakes. They are one of the most comforting breakfast treats and they have remained popular since the old ages. Pancakes remind me of lazy Saturday mornings and they are such a happy meal. There are many good pancake mixes out there however these can easily be made from scratch. This super easy pancake recipe is perfect if you like simple and quick recipes.

Super Easy Pancake Recipe

We made these when my sister came to visit around Thanksgiving time last year and they came out great. As you can tell, they all don’t have the perfect shape and uniform look as those you see in magazines and instagram but I actually like them this way. There is something about effortless, non-perfect and rustic meals that I love.

The trick is to mix the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients separately then adding them to the same bowl. Also avoid over mixing as this can lead to tough pancakes, having some small lumps in your batter is fine.

Pancake toppings are endless. You can do tangy yogurt, syrup, butter, whipped cream, strawberries, honey and so much more. We had ours with raspberries and maple syrup and they were delicious.

Easy Keto Spinach Salad Recipe

It’s week 3 of the new year and my hubby dearest is still sticking to his Keto diet. It certainly has made makes things more interesting when planning meals as I am not on the diet myself. Luckily the Keto diet includes lots of vegetables which I eat lot’s of already so it works out as I can always add carbs on the side. I made this delicious easy Keto Spinach Salad recipe for lunch the other day and it was delicious.

Easy Keto Spinach Salad Recipe

So let me start by explaining what a ketogenic diet aka ‘Keto’ diet is; keep in mind I am not a health professional and to always consult your doctor. Keto is basically a very low carb and high fat diet which shifts the body’s metabolism away from carbs to fat. The reduction of carbs then places the body into a ketosis metabolic state that makes the body efficient at burning fat for energy. A lot of people have reduced their weight significantly following this diet. I personally do not follow it as I am not trying to lose weight and love me some carbs (in moderation of course)

Now back to the recipe. This spinach salad is super simple and my Keto husband loved it so much. All you need is lots of spinach and a few toppings like blueberries, walnuts, avocado, hemp seeds and red onions. The fat comes from the nuts, hemp seeds and avocado however you can certainly add chicken, fish or steak if you are very hungry.

The dressing is also very simple and I made it by just whisking olive oil, lemon zest and lemon juice, minced garlic and freshly ground black pepper. So simple yet so delicious.
